Chapter Nine

ANGELO turned to look at me. “When I said we should do something fun and exciting, I admit I didn’t quite have this in mind.”

I grinned. “All the better.”

“This is insane.”

“Yeah.”

“I love it!”

I leaned in and kissed the side of his neck. “I hoped you would.”

“Ready, guys?” said the security expert.

I looked at Angelo’s body, clad in a bodysuit and harnessed as it was, all colorful and topped with that helmet. “You look adorable.”

He stuck his tongue out at me. “You look ridiculous. But I still love you.”

“I love you too.”

We wrapped our arms around each other and when we heard “Go!” jumped off the Space Needle. My heart thrilled as we fell. Air rushed over my face, and the main thing I was aware of besides falling was the warmth and weight of Angelo’s body. We were both screaming, I realized. Somehow, it took a while to register. The free fall was the single most exhilarating thing I’d ever experienced. Though in the back of my mind I knew there was a cord there and that we were safe, my instincts screamed at me that I was in immediate danger. The ground was hurtling toward us at a scary speed. It kept hurtling toward us. My stomach tightened with fear. Was the cord still securely in place? Why weren’t we reaching the end of the free fall? I squeezed Angelo tighter in my arms and felt him squeeze back. Just then the cord shook us. I thought my brain would break out through my skull and just keep falling to the ground. The bobbing up and down on that elastic cord was less fun than the free fall, but by then my body was tingling with adrenaline in such a way that just about anything would’ve felt exciting. The harness had felt uncomfortable before jumping. Now I didn’t even feel it on anymore.

My nerve endings were still tingling after we got down from the Needle.

“Wow,” said Angelo, grinning like a maniac.

“You know how that felt like?”

“M?”

“Exactly like I feel every time I see you.”

“So every time you see me you feel like there’s an uncomfortable harness around your package and you’re screaming your lungs off?”

“Haha. No. I feel like I’m free falling.”

He leaned in and kissed me. “You’re behaving like this is our goodbye day. Don’t act like that.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t intend to.”

“Let’s just act like this is a day to make up for many others we didn’t get to spend together. Sounds good?”

“Sounds great. Feeling hungry?”

“Actually, yes.”

“I know a great place.”

He seemed surprised when I drove back to the team’s house. I shut off the engine and looked at him from the corner of my eye.

“I have a favor I can call in. Taka’s cooking is out of this world good.”

“I think he’s more likely to poison me than actually feed me.”

“Oh, shut up. He didn’t take the security system issue personally.”

Angelo lifted an eyebrow.

“Okay, he might have,” I muttered, and bit my lower lip. “But he appreciates you pointing out the weakness in it.
